Death Note

The book I am currently reading is Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba. I am on page 182 so far. Death Note is about a death note (obviously) owned by a shinigami (death god). Ryuk the Shinigami drops the death note into the human world and it falls into the hands of 17-year old student Light Yagami. The death note is self-explanatory. It's a supernatural notebook that can kill people whose name is written into the notebook, including the way they die. Eventually, Light becomes power-hungry and goes on to commit a worldwide massacre.

One of the main characters is Light Yagami. Light is a very complex character. To start, I'll mention that he obtains a few mental disorders: narcissistic personality disorder, multiple personality disorder, bipolar disorder, massive superiority complex, and a massive god complex. Some people argue that Light is a sociopath or a psychopath. From the start, Light displayed slightly sociopathic tendencies and is also very likely to be a psychopath as he shows some strong psychopathic traits. It's either one or the other, but who knows? He is highly intelligent, manipulative, arrogant, abusive (emotionally), etc. His personal belief is that the world is rotten. So, once he got a hold of the death note he would use it to kill those whom he deems unworthy of life. In the beginning, he had good intentions with the death note, but it becomes his interest and gain. He possesses more power with this notebook and starts abusing his power. Eventually, the power he held corrupted him and it all went to his head causing him to go insane. Because of this, he acquires a god complex. He thought by using the death note to kill criminals he would become a god and make the world a better place without criminals and evil, even though his actions make him a supernatural serial killer. The summary is Light gets a hold of a death note, becomes mentally ill, later on, goes insane, and murders people for his satisfaction.

I enjoy reading Death Note. The manga is very mysterious, intriguing, and action-packed. The art, the concept, the thinking process, the suspense, the interesting characters that you'll either love or hate (especially Light's character development), a bit of comedy, and drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Even though Death Note is a very good mysterious, supernatural psychological thriller, a con is the story and plot twists can get complicated towards the end. Death Note is very different from other manga and anime. It's a masterpiece.
